Album of the Week- Halestorm

Halestorm by Halestorm

Picture
Songs on the album:

 It's Not You
I Get Off
Bet U Wish U Had Me Back
Innocence
Familiar Taste Of Poison
I'm Not An Angel
What Were You Expecting?
Love/Hate Heartbreak
Better Sorry Than Safe
Dirty Work
Nothing To Do With Love
Bonus Tracks:
Tell Me Where It Hurts
Conversation Over
Dirty Mind

Although this is not as good as The Strange Case Of..., from the first song I was enchanted. Halestorm rocked the house from "It's Not You" all the way to "Here's To Us." Lzzy's voice, as always is impressive and melodious, beautiful but moldable. She can range from singing "Dirty Work" to "Familiar Taste Of Poison," two completely different styles, with just as amazing a voice. Lzzy's got it made vocally. I LOVE her voice.

My favourite songs on the album are:

 "Innocence"
"Familiar Taste Of Poison"
 "Love/Hate Heartbreak"

Halestorm's first album is simply so amazing, it literally screams for you to go and buy it RIGHT NOW :)

13 by Black Sabbath

This has the following songs:

End of the Beginning
God is Dead
Loner
Zeitgeist
 Age of Reason
Live Forever
Damaged Soul
Dear Father

As my last guest post, I have to write about Black Sabbath.  Now there are times when I pick on students of mine for having limited musical tastes.  I give them a hard time for not branching out, or expanding their musical horizons.  Well, let me be honest about this.  It is something I have to admit, but I am certainly not one to talk about "expanding musical tastes".   From the age of 17 to the age of 21, I think I listened to only 8 albums, all from only one band.  Yes, I took those six albums and played them over and over again.  Of course I have some great memories from those albums.  Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Masters of Reality, Volume IV,  Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sabotage, Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die.  I know every word, every riff, every sound of every song.  I only heard each one about 100 times. It simply never got old.

I had a Ford Pinto those days.  No, it did not blow up, but yeah, I worried.  I had a sound system worth more than the car.  I had JBL speakers with a Pioneer system and it was all mounted under the seat so no one could see it.  It was famous.   I actually blew up three speakers, all on the same song....."NIB" from their first album.  Wow, those were the days.

Needless to say, I have been teased so many times by the on-again off-again reunion of my all-time favorite band.  This album actually got its start 12 years ago.  It simply did not happen until now.  Even now, Bill Ward could not come to an agreement with the other three members, and a different drummer was used.  Hey Bill, WTF?  You are nearly 70.  How
many more chances you got coming on this one?  I think the train left the station, and yes, you are clearly missed, but not enough to spoil my chance to hear one more amazing album, and finally, yes, finally see the original Black Sabbath.

Now, on to this album.  It simply rocks. It is amazing.  I love this album.  The first single, "God is Dead", is simply put, one of the best songs to be written in, coincidentally, 36 years.  Wow, imagine that.  This album has been raked over the coals for its mixing, for its sound and for everything else.  But I am a Black Sabbath fan....enough of one to where I only listened to Black Sabbath for years.  And for me, this album is amazing.   Thank you Ozzy.  Thanks Geezer.  Thanks Tony.  I have been waiting for this my entire adult life. I know you had to put aside years of difficulties, but THANK YOU!!! The show at the Sports Arena in LA is going to be amazing.

The thing is, Black Sabbath did something no one else has ever done.  They have had two #1 albums.....separated by 43 years.  Wow.  43 years apart.  Unreal.

Listen.  Maybe you are young, and maybe you have never explored the world of Black Sabbath. So much of what we listen to today has been based off what these four guys did two generations ago.  Buy this album.  Listen.  Enjoy.  And become the next generation of life-long Black Sabbath fanatics.

Dan Adler was raised in Southern California to a mom and dad, one of whom appreciated Creedence and left wing anti-war politics.  By the teenage years, Dan became obsessed with Black Sabbath, listening to the same seven albums repeatedly for 5 years.  During this time, his favorite concert experience was seeing Metallica open for a bunch of bands that no longer exist and winning the 1st ever Santa Cruz Air Guitar contest.  After several years in Africa listening and dancing to Chimurenga music, Dan returned to have the two best children in the world, one of whom spends a lot of time at concerts with him.   What a lucky dad!

Crest Of The Knave by Jethro Tull

Picture
The songs on the album:

Steel Monkey
Farm On the Freeway
Jump Start
She Said She Was A Dancer
Dogs In the Midwinter
Budapest
 Mountain Men
The Waking Edge
Raising Steam
Picture
Ian Anderson
Jethro Tull is such a great band, and in concert they are just as amazing. His Aqualung anniversary concert was the first concert I ever went to, and I must say that Jethro Tull holds a place in my heart for that.

I am a flute player, so when I listen to Jethro Tull I cannot help but admire Anderson's amazing flute playing. He really is a fantastic flute player.

He does not have a very strong accent in his records, but in concert is very prominent, and actually sounds really good anyhow.

My favourite songs on the album are "Farm On The Freeway," "Budapest," "She Said She Was A Dancer," and "Jump Start."

I absolutely love how the flute mixes with the guitar sound into this addictive sound that can put you in a reverie where music is all you can hear, and it envelops you from all sides.

Jethro Tull is simply amazing! Check them out if you don't know their music.

Album of the Week- We Stitch These Wounds

We Stitch These Wounds by Black Veil Brides

Picture
Songs on the album:

The Outcast (Call to Arms) featuring Urban Flaunders
We Stitch These Wounds
Beautiful Remains
Children Surrender
Perfect Weapon
Knives and Pens
The Mortician's Daughter
All Your Hate
Heaven's Calling
Never Give In
Sweet Blasphemy
Carolyn

Me: This is the cheapest Black Veil Brides album on sale.
Dad: Then that's what we'll buy.
Me: But it's their first album...! Those are never the best!
Dad: Deal with it.

 After listening to album....

Me: I'm officially in love with Black Veil Brides!!
Dad: See, and it only costed us $5.

Surprisingly, BVB was a lot like Affiance, with the heavy, bass drum-driven bass line and intricate guitarwork. However, Affiance would never write a song like "Carolyn."

Many people protest screamo, saying it is the worst music they have ever heard. I am here to say that BVB can make it work. I do actually like sreamo, but my dad doesn't and he like BVB. BVB is not at all straight screamo, they just use it here and there.

My favourite songs on the album would have to be "Knives and Pens," "Sweet Blasphemy," and "The Mortician's Daughter."

Their appearance should not be used to judge their music. I have heard them described as a group of boys who look like Justin Beiber and dress like Kiss.

Their music is better than Beiber or Kiss, don't worry.

This is excellent music. I suggest checking them out!

Album of the Week- The Campaign

The Campaign by Affiance

Picture
Songs on the album:

Kings of Deceit
You Will Be Replaced
We The Machines
Bohemian featuring Matty Mullins
Peace of Mind
Class Dismissed
 Jericho
The Cynic
 The Campaign
Righteous Kill
Threshold

I started out listening to this album, and was in complete denial. Example of thoughts:
No. I can't listen to this. No Secret Revealed is the better album. Why am I listening to this?

Then I had an epiphany along the lines of HOLY CRAP THIS IS AMAZING!

My music teacher once said to me that music that takes a while for you to really enjoy will be enjoyed for much longer, and that the chances of you getting sick of it are much slimmer.

She was very right about that. It took me a few weeks to really appreciate this album, and now I can listen to it over and over for weeks on end and I will NEVER get sick of it.

My favourite songs on the album are "You Will Be Replaced," "Class Dismissed," (Why aren't they playing this in concert?!?!) and "Righteous Kill." Although all of the songs are awesome, those still are the best.
Picture
This album is incredibly well crafted; the order of songs flows perfectly. It opens with "Kings of Deceit" which starts with a recording of the radio announcing JFK's death.

You can anticipate intricate guitar work accompanied with excellent vocals with tremendous range and a heavy bass line played also by the bass drum. The drummer is fantastic, the lead singer is friggin amazing, the guitarists are phenomenal, and the bassist is awesome. You can't get a band better than Affiance when it comes to musical skill.

I suggest you check out this album, you won't be disappointed.

Look forward to a new Album of the Week every Saturday!
